(192) Holocaust and the Shakespeare Authorship : The war of words has escalated....

Holocaust and the Shakespeare Authorship :

The war of words has escalated....

Richarard Waugman                      Gary Taylor
                      An Oxfordian                          A dogmatic Stratfordian

What an irony, if it finally turns out that  neither Shakspere nor Oxford was the true candidate...

->Blog 186 and ->Blog 187  informed you on the increasing rethoric violence of  Stratfordians against Antistratfordians (the non-believers of the Stratfordian theory)

Meanwhile Graeme Paton of the ->The Daily-Telegraph, Sept.11 2014 tells us, that the war of words has escalated, in which Shakespearean academics clash over 'conspiracy theories' . -

They trade blows over a paper of Richard Waugaman questioning whether Shakespeare penned his own plays, with a rival professor Gary Taylor   comparing the conclusions to those of a "Holocaust denier"

Prof Taylor himself has refused to back down, telling the  ->"Times Higher Education"(Sept.11, 2014) of the Times of London that Waugaman's work was

fundamentally unscholarly, irrational and illogical”,
reiterating that

. I compared it to the work of Holocaust-deniers not because the damage to Shakespeare is comparable to the damage to the millions of people killed by the Nazis, but because Waugaman’s work depends upon the same kind of conspiratorial claims. You cannot reason with such claims, because they dismiss empirical evidence as just another conspiracy. The idea that anti-Stratfordian zealots are ‘censored’ is ridiculous.”

The war of words has clearly escalated, with Prof Waugaman hitting back over a “lack of common decency”, while warning that comparisons with the Holocaust were “especially disgusting”.

(191) The moral dilemma with the Calvin Hoffman prize or the ridiculousness of the Hoffman Theory for the Stratfordian Cartel

Lukas Erné  (like many ultra-orthodox Strafordians) received the Calvin Hoffman Prize 2002 rejecting strongly the Hoffman  theory

. Calvin  would rotate in his grave if he could.

Prof. Lukas Erné      Geneva                                Prof.Jonathan Bate     Oxford

Lukas Erné, Professor of  English Literature at the University of Geneva received the Calvin Hoffman Prize 2002 (Adjucator: Jonathan Bate s.Blog) for his essay "Biography, Mythography and Criticism: The life and works of Christopher Marlowe",*1

In this work on specific problems at Marlowe Erné made no mention of the Marlowe / alias Shakespeare theory of Calvin Hoffman. There can hardly be any doubt that Erné rejects the Hoffman theory strongly.
Did he really deserve the prize (as many other award winners), although he has not made a contribution to the actual objective of Calvin Hoffman and his Memorial Trust?

Calvin  Hoffman  at the time had been mercilessly taken for a ride by the Stratfordian Cartel.
This "moral dilemma" [A cardinal can never be forced, to deny his God] is not likely to change unless a [non existent] impartial, unbiased neutral "Non-Stratfordian"  Adjudicator will be appointed.

Prof. Jonathan Bate, high ranked  academic Stratfordian expert, also a strict opponent of the Marlowe theory,
was  awarded 1995 with the Calvin Hoffman prize. A few years later he was the adjucator of Erné s prize.

WHAT a GROTESQUE!

(190) Dream lunch date of Hillary Clinton with Shakespeare ?

→Blog 172  revealed  the answer of Hillary Clinton to the question of the New York Times (June 11,2014) :
NYT "You’re hosting a literary dinner party. Which three writers are invited?”

Hillary Clinton .“I’d choose to have one guest for a long dinner: William Shakespeare. I’m curious to see who would show up and what he really wrote.”

The Daily Telegraph on Sept 6, 2014  asked a →similar question to Tony Little, Headmaster of the Eton College:
DT : "Give us your "Dream lunch date?

Tony Little :"The playwright Christopher Marlowe, who would be nothing if not entertaining.

Whom did Hillary expect? and does it mean that Tony Little also belongs  to the  intellectual group with →reasonable doubts on the Stratford man   or even  to the Group of  "Antistratfordians"(s.Blog 148) ? -

(189)The Shakespeare syndicate and the appalling history of the Calvin Hoffman prize... a "sleazy" English affair!

Most early  Pricewinners not to be justified according to Calvin Hoffmans intention  (Founder of the Award)!

Ernst Honigmann                                                            Stanley Wells                                                                            Park Honan

+  Daryl Grantley      Jonathan Bate   T.W.Craik

For the last 25 years  the Hoffman prize winners habe been chosen by one of 6 single "Stratfordian" adjudicators   i.e.
Ernst Honigmann ,Stanley Wells , Park Honan, Daryl Grantley,  Jonathan Bate , T.W.Craik

_______________

Some  earlier  Hoffman Price winners  -  All ultra-orthodox "Stratfordian" i.e. Anti-Marlowian Academic Experts - .  L Danson (1990) J. Shapiro (1994) L. Hopkins (1994) Jonathan Bate (1995) ,David Riggs(1998), Lukas Erné (2002)

Calvin Hoffman, born Leo Hochman  NY (1906 – 1986), was an American theater critic, press agent and writer who popularized in his groundbraking book

"The Murder of the man who was SHAKESPEARE(1955)"
the Marlovian Theory that playwright Christopher Marlowe was the actual author of the works attributed to William Shakespeare.

With his approaching death Hoffman realized not to be able to finally prove the Thesis of his  work:

he bequeathed his entire substantial fortune to  the Kings School of Canterbury as the "The Calvin & Rose G Hoffman Marlowe Memorial Trust"  (registered charity no. 289971) dedicated to future research  to pursue the Marlovian line of his inquiry, with an annual price, and a Principal Prize, which will be [finally] awarded to the person who

"has in the opinion of the King's School furnished irrefutable and incontrovertible proof and evidence required to satisfy the world of Shakespearian scholarship that all the plays and poems now commonly attributed to William Shakespeare were in fact written by Christopher Marlowe."

Since a quarter of a century the Annual  Hoffman Prize -was awarded (according to the Marlowe Society-)  ...  to the person who  submits to The King's School (Canterbury) an essay that most convincingly examines and discusses in depth ... the authorship of the plays and poems (now commonly attributed to William Shakespeare) with particular regard to the possibility that Christopher Marlowe wrote some or all of those plays and poems, or made some inspirational creative or compositional contributions towards the authorship of them..

For many years an invisible Shakespeare Cartell (represented by the Kings School Canterbury) designated  a singular adjudicator  (until today conservative "Stratfordians", s.above) who - in the first 15 years or so - didn't take care  to the primary Intention of Calvin Hoffman, and awarded the prize always to "Stratfordians" until Peter Farey made these significant inconsistencies public.- The longest time the Shakespeare Cartell must have been (and still is) convinced that  Hoffmann's thesis was basically ridiculous, the offspring of a "Lost one"....[personal interpretation].(s.Stanley Wells first adjudicator - s.Blogs  148, → 132, → 118, →119, →97, →21, →20, →11 )
Hoffman's (ethical) standards have been fully taken for a ride.

Academic supression of the →Marlowe/Shakespeare Thesis for a long time  was so perfect, that there were no outstanding Marlowians  (like Dolly Wraight) , who dared to apply for an award. - The financial ressources and spenditures of the The Calvin & Rose G Hoffman Marlowe Memorial Trust (Charity) ,worth about a one million pounds (Ref), have never been made  publicly available!

(188) "Nothing in Shakespeare is meaningless".- Noemi Magri: "The true Shakespeare" must have visited Italy.

..... William Shakspere from Stratford did not write the plays.

Noemi Magri

Noemi Magri, PhD (deceased May 2011), Italian Fulbright scholar (New York University, 1985) and instructor of English at Mantua’s "Istituto Tecnico Industriale Statale" (ITIS , State Industrial Technical Institute), for most of her professional career, taught English at   ITIS in her native town Mantua

For her last 15 years she conducted her research and writings required to produce her book "Such Fruits Out of Italy" (Laugwitz Verlag 2014), a collection of essays that makes a serious case for the idea that Shakespeare must have visited Italy, investigated before  also by other authors (s.Blog 66)

I  agree with Noemi Magri  that

"Nothing in Shakespeare is meaningless".
She exemplifies this with numerous overlooked or misinterpreted details regarding Shakespeare's intimate knowledge of Italy: its art, geography, politics, law, etymologies, and more. Collecting Magri's work into one volume here, "Such Fruits Out of Italy" is a treasury of Shakespearean investigations, and a victory of scholarship.

(187) Meanwhile 3 high profile acedemic Shakespeare experts compared Shakespeare-Doubters with Holocaust deniers.

University professors of English Literature departments  are deliberately and systematically dedicated to the silencing of anyone who expresses doubt.

(s.Blog186- Gary Taylor)

                                                        Jonathan Bate                                Gary Taylor
                                                                                                                                                                                                                    Stephen Greenblatt

The violence of Academia towards „Anti-Stratfordians“ is unprofessional, troublesome and unjustified, since there is nothing neither morally or scientifically wrong in questioning Shakespearean authorship nor is it unreasonable  to raise serious doubts, wether Shakspere ("of the records") is identical with Shakespeare ("of the canon").

At present university professors of English Literature departments  are deliberately and systematically dedicated to the silencing of anyone who expresses doubt.(s.Blog186- Gary Taylor)

They shout down „Authorship doubters(synonym to „Shakespeare deniers“)  rather than giving reasonable answers to countless reasonable, but unanswered questions
High profile Shakesperare experts, Professors →Jonathan Bate, →Stephen Greenblatt and →Gary Taylor all have distinguished themselves by associating Shakespeare doubters (→"Anti-Stratfordians" s.Blog. 148) not only as "Shakespeare deniers" but by specifically comparing them with the group of ‘Holocaust deniers’.

After →Jonathan Bate (2003) and →Steven Greenblatt (s. also Blog 152)Gary Taylor Blog 186) is now third in the row of high profile Shakespeare Experts and Stratfordians who compared Anti-Stratfordians ("Post-Shakespeareans") with Holocaust deniers.

Apparently they seem to have no other means anymore than to lash about ..
                                 What a terrible aberration!

(186) Shakespeare expert Gary Taylor compares Oxfordian Richard Waugaman with a holocaust denier...

For a Stratfordian expert such as  Gary Taylor, academic freedom means the freedom to silence dissent.

_______________________

Former Journal Memoria editors Luciana Piré and Mario Valenti had invited Richard Waugaman to contribute to the volume’s 2015 special issue on “Shakespeare Biography.”

Professor Gary Taylor explained to Richard M.Waugaman why these two (previous) editors of the volume had been pushed aside and why his already accepted article had been trashed without notice or rationale, and why he, Taylor had assumed the helm of authority at the beleaguered but aptly titled,  Memoria di Shakespeare:
(Details  Linda Theil)

Taylor wrote in his letter to Waugaman:
"This change is due to my own involvement in the volume. The editorial board was concerned about some of the contributions invited by the previous co-editors. I agreed to help by stepping in, with Professor Colombo, as new co-editor. But my acceptance was conditional on rejection of certain contributions, like yours, which seem to me profoundly unscholarly, and which would have the effect of undermining the credibility and status of other contributions to the volume.....my objections to your position about Shakespeare’s biography cannot be described as in any way institutional or based on a conflict of interest. I simply find your reasoning, and your evidence, as unconvincing as those of Holocaust deniers, and other conspiracy theorists.
I understand that you are chargrined about the change of policy at the journal. But the previous co-editors, who contacted you, were themselves guilty of a breach of good faith, in committing the journal to positions conflicted with the intentions and desires of the journal’s founders.
   Sincerely,   Gary Taylor

GaryTaylor must have realized that publishing Waugamans article would undermine the status and the credibility of all Stratfordians. There  can be little doubt that for a Stratfordian such as  Gary Taylor,
academic freedom means the freedom to silence dissent.

(185) What's the worst thing you can do to the Shakespeare authorship question? Ignore Christopher Marlowe !

An unexcusable thing the authors did to the real poet-genius "Shake-speare"

and to the authorship question: they  ignored Christopher Marlowe...

What’s the worst thing you can do to Shakespeare ? (or to Mozart or to Michelangelo?)
Don’t read him, (or don’t listen to him, dont look at his paintings!)

What may have been the cause that 2 professors of English,

Richard Burt (left) and
Julian Yates (right)

deliberately choose such a truism as their book title:

What's the worst thing you can do to Shakespeare
published in 2013 by PALGRAVE MACMILLAN®

Obviously because they want to draw attention to the ways in which a variety of media forms - film, audio recordings, digital media, manuscript and print sources create gaps in the archive that is Shakespeare  (Review M.Whitmore)

The last (fifth) chapter „Anonymous/Anony-mess“ of their book deals with the Shakespeare Authorship question:

Excerpt Chap.5 "….ready, in fact, to take on something that thus far we have avoided: the question of authorship, of who or what it was that is said to have written all those plays and poems attributed to “William Shakespeare.” The candidates, you may remember, run as follows: William Shakespeare, the actor turned writer from Stratford- upon- Avon; Francis Bacon, the writer, scientist, philosopher, and statesman; Edward de Vere, the Seventeenth Earl of Oxford, who has proved the most popular alternative candidate to Shakespeare since the 1920s. Then, of course, there are the outliers, the multiplied host of collaborators (Thomas Middleton, John Fletcher, and so on) as well as the other variously textual remains that now augment the contents of the First Folio ..."

Chapter 5 deals with Ronald Emerichs Film "Anonymous" and his Shakespeare candidate Edward de Vere.  - The worst and unexcusable thing the authors did to the real poet-genius "Shake-speare" and to the authorship question: they "created gaps" in the archive that is the Shakespeare authorship question by ignoring Christopher Marlowe...

(184) Shakespeare and the desperate unifications of SF with SOS to SOF

Why the necessity of  the "Shakespeare Fellowship ( S F )" to unify with "S O S"

to " S O F " (Shakespeare-Oxford-Fellowship)?

the main reasons for the unification of 2 separate Shakespeare-Oxford organisations must have been the remarkable  decline of interest in the SF Website and Forum over the last years?

Two long standing organizations, the Shakespeare Fellowship (SF) and the Shakespeare Oxford Society (SOS) have unified  2013 under the new name

                                     Shakespeare Oxford Fellowship (SOF)

The Shakespeare Fellowship (SF) at  first  was  devoted to the study of the Shakespeare authorship not endorsing any particular candidate.  SF was founded in England in 1921 by J. Thomas Looney and Sir George Greenwood a prominent "
anti-Stratfordian" who had never declared his support for any particular alternative author.
Unfortunately after Greenwoods death (1628) the SF became somewhat inevitably totally  identified with Oxfordian theory: promoting Edward de Vere, 17th Earl of Oxford as the sole  true author of the works of Shakespeare.

The main reasons for the unification of 2 separate Shakespeare-Oxford organisations – I suppose- was the remarkable dramatic  decline of interest in the SF Website and Forum over the last decades.

Todays last comprehensive candidate-neutral  authorship website and  resource has become

        The Shakespearean Authorship Trust      (SAT)

(183) A wrap-up of the Oxfordian / Stratfordian thesis .

The obvious reasons for the failure of a Shakespeare authorship debate....

Shouldn`t one  eventually abandon the "second best" Shakspeare-authorship theory" (The Earl of Oxford) ?

It exists a →final roll-in from a three-hour teleconferenced life  debate on the Shakespeare Authorship Issue, "Uncovering Shakespeare, Sept.17th 1992.

It included comments by David Bevington, Charles Champlin, Fr. Francis Edwards, SJ., John Savage, Charles Boyle, Earle Hyman, Roger Stritmatter, Paul Nitze, Deborah Bacon and Don Richardson. - On the panel, moderated by William F. Buckley, Jr., were Charles Vere, Earl of Burford, Gary Taylor, Felicia Londré, Warren Hope, Tom Bethell, and Rebecca Flynn.

The →final written update (click also Video!) reveals, why the debate ended without any concrete results. The failure of any progress occured, because the debate dealt almost exclusively with the Oxford-Shakespeare Theory and with Oxfordians... . -

Hasn't time come to convince younger generations that the centuries-old  unscientific

Dogma:   Shakspere (Stratford) equals  William Shakespeare (author of the plays)

has to be abandoned in favor of a more  robust scientific

           ParadigmMarlowe equals William Shakespeare (pseudonym)

Overwhelming arguments and evidence show that by giving up the "second best" Shakspeare-authorship theory (The Earl of Oxford) in favour of accepting  a historical "life-saving" plot (Marlowe had to give up his identity and name), virtally all unsolved questions concerning the century-old Shakespeare authorship debate can be answered.

(182) Shakespeare plays ("printed as written by Shakespeare " during his lifetime) are not accepted today as written by him ?

A glorious mess ! An obscure  Shakespeare  Cartel  has early decided.

Bottomless" weak  arguments of Shakespeare experts: they all must be Conspiracy theorists!
___________________

Experts claim that many contemporary plays [and poems]

                                                             printed as

"written by Shakespeare" or "written by W.S."

during Shakespeare's  lifetime,  actually were not written by Shakespeare! Have you ever become aware of the fact how "bottomless" weak the arguments of Shakespeare experts are, that plays and poems printed during Shakespeare's lifetime with his name  on the plays, were not written by him ? They all must be conspiracy theorists [See faksimiles below!]

Why are there so few theater directors who dare to stage these pieces as plays by William Shakespeare? Wouldn't it be interesting to read who dared to disagree (and why) with the printed authorship of William during his own lifetime, [no-one can safely disprove]?
                                                                       ------------

Doesn't  all this correspond perfectly to a necessary historic plot? Why couldn't "Will", the Stratford-Man, [on the basis of knowledge availably today] have been an unimaginable deception and one of  numerous frontmen or pseudonyms for a deadly threatened poet-genius [Marlowe]?

(181) Why "William Shakespeare" had no part in the....?
