(192) Holocaust and the Shakespeare Authorship : The war of words has escalated....

H O L O C A U S T  and the Shakespeare Authorship

The war of words has escalated....

Richarard Waugman                      Gary Taylor
                      An Oxfordian                          A dogmatic Stratfordian

What an irony, if it finally turns out that  neither Shakspere nor Oxford was the true candidate...

->Blog 186 and ->Blog 187  informed you on the increasing rethoric violence of  Stratfordians against Antistratfordians (the non-believers of the Stratfordian theory)

Meanwhile Graeme Paton of the ->The Daily-Telegraph, Sept.11 2014 tells us, that the war of words has escalated, in which Shakespearean academics clash over 'conspiracy theories' . -

They trade blows over a paper of Richard Waugaman questioning whether Shakespeare penned his own plays, with a rival professor Gary Taylor   comparing the conclusions to those of a "Holocaust denier"

Prof Taylor himself has refused to back down, telling the  ->"Times Higher Education"(Sept.11, 2014) of the Times of London that Waugaman's work was

“fundamentally unscholarly, irrational and illogical”,

reiterating that

[ Taylor ]“. I compared it to the work of Holocaust-deniers not because the damage to Shakespeare is comparable to the damage to the millions of people killed by the Nazis, but because Waugaman’s work depends upon the same kind of conspiratorial claims. You cannot reason with such claims, because they dismiss empirical evidence as just another conspiracy. The idea that anti-Stratfordian zealots are ‘censored’ is ridiculous.”

The war of words has clearly escalated, with Prof Waugaman hitting back over a “lack of common decency”, while warning that comparisons with the Holocaust were “especially disgusting”.

(118) Stanley Wells: Why these emotions in the Shakespeare authorship debate? (part 1)

S T A N L E Y   W E L L S  (4)

The Authorship enigma…

an agreement (on the authorship issue) will probably not be possible. -

-------------------------------

Comfort can only be found in the insight of the great Max Planck who made a great confession  at the end of his life:

Elderly British Shakespeare Expert and professor Emeritus Sir Stanley Wells in a →Swiss TV Interview (lately erased) on the Shakespeare authorship issue replyed to the Question

Why these emotions?
Stanley Wells: ....it’s emotional because it is irrational! there is no reason behind the thought that Shakespeare did not write Shakespeare.

So all the people who put forward that idea, in my opinion, are fanatics. They are not scholars. I don’t know of any serious Shakespeare scholar, who believes that Shakespeare didn’t write Shakespeare; the people who didn't [or do not] believe that Shakespeare did not write Shakespeare are amateurs, they are actors, or they are „literateurs“, they are men of letters, they are not the real scholars.
Nobody who really knows about the Elizabethan period has ever suggested, that Shakespeare didn’t write Shakespeare.      (s.also  Blog 25, 102)

(115) Only(!) Posthumous Evidence is patently absurd! i..

POSTHUMOUS  E V I D EN C E

insufficient to prove that Shakespeare the writer was
 the man from Stratford ...

Stanley Wells on →his home page commented on Diana Price’s response to his blog about her book "→Shakespeare’s Unorthodox Biography.

"Wells: ...Diana Price writes that ‘Shakespeare is the only alleged writer of consequence from the period for whom he [we?] must rely on posthumous evidence to prove that Shakespeare the writer was the man from Stratford.’ So far as documentary evidence goes this is true, but as I have said I see no justification for discounting posthumous evidence. Absence of evidence is not evidence of Absence.

In a
Swiss-TV Interview Stanley Wells Nov.11th 2009 underlined this position: `...to dismiss all posthumous evidence out of hand, as some of the Deniers [Anti-Stratfordians] do, is patently absurd.'

Comment: Doubters do not `dismiss all posthumous evidence out of hand.'    There are, however, significant reasons to question the validity of the posthumous evidence in the Shakespeare case, starting with the fact that it is uncorroborated by the kind of contemporaneous evidence found for other writers of the time.

This oddity led doubters to scrutinize the posthumous evidence and see that it is problematic.

(111) There are no reliable lifetime images of Shakespeare, yet so many, biographers used faked portaits ,Honest experts?

 SHAKESPEARE BIOGRAPHERS

and all their faked portraits

 of (pseudo)-images of Shakespeare!

_________________________

We have no proof that Shakespeare himself ever had a portrait done of himself, and there is no written description of his physical appearance. So our knowledge of his appearance is fairly limited.

Because of his fame and the lack of accurate images, countless fake Shakespeare images cropped up and portraits of others were often mislabeled as Shakespeare.

It’s hard to determine exactly how all these fake portraits
impacted the image we now have of Shakespeare.

Probably the most accurate (authentic?) but posthumous  images of Shak(e)speare are considered to come from

a) the Droeshout engravement and
b) the Stratford monument.

One has to call
 most Shakespeare biographers
 in some way "dishonest  experts":

they all used not authentic "faked" portraits !!

(apart perhaps from the 2-   most likely authenthic portraits below )

Your sincere  OPINION ??
Why the left picture (of Shaksperes Bust in the Trinity Church in Stratford, ca 1622/3?)   has never reached the Title Cover of a Shakespeare biography?

The monument doesn’t represent  the Genius but the local citizen .

(110) Don Rubin: The Shakespeare authorship issue (without any doubt) will not goe away...

D O N  R U B I N

„ ....if we get the identity of the greatest writer of all time wrong,

surely there’s a problem somewhere that needs to be solved.    „

.
                      Don Rubin

Don Rubin, President of the Canadian Theatre Critics Association,  Professor of Theatre at Toronto’s York University, in →Critical Stages  (A Web journal of the International Association of Theatre Critics - IATC) wrote a review in

→"Shakespeare beyond Doubt?     Exposing an Industry in Denial.

Some final quotations from this review:
...It took authority 500 years to admit it was wrong about the sun moving around the earth. During those centuries, those who kept trying to show people the facts were ridiculed into oblivion. And no doubt, those who today want to open the authorship debate in academe find themselves under similar attack.

...the authorship issue, without any doubt, remains and seems  (if the remarkable number of books pouring out on this subject is any indication) to be getting even hotter.

Does it ultimately matter?
The plays still remain whoever wrote them. Certainly, that’s true. But if we get the identity of the greatest writer of all time wrong, surely there’s a problem somewhere that needs to be solved.

(109) Shakespeare authorship issue: Robert Detobel's open conclusions ....?

ROBERT  DETOBEL

"   the doubters ...will have to present an alternative candidate

....whoever he will be, they will have to find a plausible answer to the question why an illiterate or almost illiterate man was chosen as a front...

Robert Detobel,  (1939-2018) since decades most active "Oxfordian" in Germany, wrote a  →Review (Engl.)  in the german Web portal  →"Theaterforschung" about the book "Shakespeare Beyond Doubt? Exposing an Industry in Denial"

Last paragraph of the Review [Quotation]

But the job of the doubters cannot be considered final either. They will have to present an alternative candidate. And whoever he will be, they will have to find a plausible answer to the question of why an illiterate or almost illiterate man was chosen as the front. But that understanding a little further than “nescience” is possible — this the book has made plausibly clear.

What may have driven Robert Detobel not to mention his favourite candidate "Edward de Vere", even once? Did he change his mind [to Marlowe?] ?
That's highly unlikely. I suppose it may be of a diplomatic nature....

(107) Gelferts aberrant conclusions

HANS-DIETER    G E L F E R T (6)

Gelfert:  "Anti-Stratfordianism" can only be explained on the basic human need to construct conspiracy theories!

German English and "orthodox" Shakespeare expert Professor (Emeritus) →Hans -Dieter Gelfert, Berlin in the prologue of entitled "Who created the works of Shakespeare?" of his new book →"William Shakespeare in his time " (Jan.2014 Beck Verlag) felt compelled, to counteract the ongoing global authorship debates, e.g. of the Marlowe Thesis of B.Conrad "→The true Shakespeare: Christopher Marlowe " (2nd Edition, December 2013 ) and of the Oxford Thesis of K. Kreiler.

At the end of his short prologue, he emphasizes that the strong efforts of the "Anti-Stratfordians", mentioned above, can only be explained on the basic human need to construct conspiracy theories (see also →Blog Nr.15, and →Blog Nr.50) which suggest, that someone else wrote the plays.

Gelferts resume on Conrad's Marlowe Theory (German)

: His broad interest in conspiracy theories, his belief system is immune against doubts. He does not trust secured scientific knowledge.

What a totally topsy turvy World!!

(105) Lukas Erne supports Shakespeare's treacherous "Quislings"

PROF.  L U K A S  E R N E

Oddly enough he thinks

of our poet Genius Shakespeare as a "team player"

Lukas Erne, Professor of English Literature at the University of Geneva  (renowned Shake-speare und Marlowe expert) challenges in his book "→Shakespeare's Modern Collaborators"  (E-book Series "Shakespeare NOW" Vol.8, 2008) the view,  that Shakespeare is solely responsible for the play texts we read today.

He emphasizes at the very beginning, that he does not do so, however,  because he shares the view of the so-called "Anti-Stratfordians", who have constructed "conspiracy theories" (see also Blog Nr.15,  and Blog Nr.50) to suggest, that someone else wrote the plays.

Rather he bases his arguments on scholarships, which claim it obvious that Shakespeare's texts are the result of various kinds of cooperation (coauthorship, collaboration with actors, printers, intervention of editors). This is where the  "Academic Authorship Taboo" comes full circle.

Did Erne really think of our poet Genius
Shakespeare as a "team player"?

Why he didn't at least discuss the possibility that his alleged coworkers (like Peele, Middleton, Wilkins, Fletcher and such like) could have been constructed treacherous pseudonymous collaborators or Quisling?

(104) Ross Barber and Charles Nicholl argue pro and con about the Marlowe Shakespeare Theory....

 R O S   B A R B E R (2)

Charles Nichols daring Judgment

:...the evidence for someone else [other than the Stratford man] having written those plays is entirely non-existent, ...

October 4th 2013, on the occasion of the →"Cheltenham Literature Festival

" Ros Barber, the literary prize winner and author of the verse novel →"The Marlowe Papers"

discussed with historian and author of →"The Reckoning", Charles Nicholl,  the Marlowe-Shakespeare Authorship theory. The session was recorded and you may listen to the discussion- click below....

Charles Niccoll Book 2 editions
The  reckoning `1993. / 2003

listen to the discussion (1h 20min)

Rarely the discussion was enlightening since both only perpetuated their views. I learnt that Nicholl had significantly changed the Scenario of Marlowe's death between his first (1993) and second Edition (2003) in his book "The Reckoning".. In the first Edition, Marlowe was deliberately killed. In the second  Edition, the death was a blunder.....I hope for a Third Edition, in which the death will be a pretence.

Nicholls Statement":...the evidence for someone else [other  than the  Stratford man] having written those plays is entirely non-existent, there is not one  scrap of contemporary evidence to suggest  that there was any kind of extraordinary sleight of hand being performed by the most popular dramatist of the day ..."
-----------------
If this would be true one had to accept that about 1000 (that's correct! thousand!) arguments (of high probability) identified in the →Marlowe Book  and this Blog had to be false, It seems appropriate to hesitate to accept the statement of Nicholl.

Opposition from the followers of Marlowe

(102) Sir Stanley Wells' deliberately misleading book title !

S T A N L E Y   W E L L S (3)

Sir Stanley Wells' deliberately misleading book title !

If Stanley Wells  would have been an honest man

he would have put the title question of his book differently.-

-------------------------------------------------------------------

→Stanley Wells, renowned Shakespeare expert and former Head  of the →"Shakespeare Birthplace Trust" published  Febr.4th 2014 a new e-book entitled  "Why Shakespeare was Shakespeare"

It's dishonest, that Wells falsifies the spelling of the name of the Stratford man.
There do exist no "familiar" records (like baptism, wedding, births, deaths, will, signatures)  wheresoever, showing the Stratford man's name written as "Shake" instead of "Shak".

By claiming with the title Phrase that the two names are the same, and spelling them the same, Wells deliberately misleads the reader from the beginning into thinking that of course, the Stratford man was also the author.

If Wells would have been an honest man he would have put the question:

Was   Shakspere [Stratford]  the author Shakespeare of "Hamlet" ?
or
                   Why Shakspere was Shakespeare?

 "Calendar Page" Febr.26 of Marlowe

February 26, 2014 →Eva Pfister, writer and journalist,  produced for the daily → "Calendar Page " of German-Radio Culture a radio broadcast about Christopher Marlowe on the occasion of his 450 birthday .

Mrs. Pfister finally concluded :      the absurdity of The MARLOWE/SHAKESPEARE Idea

[Translation] He[MARLOWE] was only 29 years old and at the height of his fame , when stabbed to death May 30th  1593  in a pub in Deptford . Probably they wanted to eliminate a potential traitor. Rather absurd though is the idea that this was just an apparent death  , and Christopher Marlowe wrote his immortal dramas under the name of Shakespeare.

It is most astonishing, how easily the "advanced" writer Eva Pfister wipes the Marlowe Thesis *1) aside with a single sentence  ( ...., although the reference of the Marlowe book in Germany is given at the end of the subsequent →Deutschland-Radio text

Rather outlandish, however, is the thesis that this was only an apparent death, and Christopher Marlowe, under the name of Shakespeare, wrote his immortal Dramas.
