(589) The intangibility of the Marlowe / Shakespeare authorship thesis.-

When will Marlowe ever get

 his Chance?

Wittenberg

The (MSA) Marlowe Society of America held its 8th International Conference from 10–13 July, 2018 in Wittenberg, Germany,  an important historic center of both religion and culture in sixteenth-century Germany….its university (now known as the "Leucorea") was made the alma mater of Shakespeare's Hamlet ("Let not thy mother lose her prayers, Hamlet: / I pray thee, stay with us; go not to Wittenberg."). The town also served as backdrop for the B-Text Doctor Faustus, the locale where Faustus first "surfeits upon cursed necromancy" and where his life ends "All torn asunder by the hand of death!"

Could MSA organize a conference with 70 lecturers without sponsorship? No....it is obvious that sponsorship depended on the INTANGIBILITY Of THE STRATFORD DOGMA . Crossing this sacred frontier, (by dealing with the Marlowe / Shakespeare authorship)  the conference and MSA would have had no chance to get institutional financial support.

The International Marlowe Conference featured keynote presentations by all the ultra-dogmatic  Stratfordian scholars such as Lukas Erne (University of Geneva), Kristen Poole (University of Delaware), Holger Syme (University of Toronto) ,  and Meghan C. Andrews [ unfortunately recently deceased!] and many more.

Be aware, Marlowe ( if he is not Shakespeare) is licensed for research (only)  but not for  the prohibited zone of plausible theories ,  the entrance  is advisable only for those who are really independent and free, who have nothing to lose , who are no longer hurt when the official exorcist supervisors of literature signify that "doubting is mental illness " (J. D. Dixon) and these who disobey the blind „Stratfordian or Oxfordian“ faith " are just crazy" (Stanley Wells). And they call themselves scholars?!

Look at the long Marlowe resources bibliography on the MSA home page. And look at the much longer  Shakespeare bibliographies anywhere in the world.  An army of researchers will have to face that their work (sometimes life work) is a pile of scientific garbage. As long as this consacrated legend reigns, it's a better choice for them to accept benefits, job, professional advancement, prestige, reputation instead of risking „Career Suicide“.- Their price is to accept also the rules of silence (omerta), and put the common sense in the wardrobe — or even better in the safe.

In Wittenberg Megan C.Andrews (unfortunately deceased in June 2023)

gave a speech on Michael Drayton ,

earlier she had published an interesting  article entitled

For  reasons mentioned above (“Career suicide“), in her article (and at the conference) she didn‘t even dare to discuss a plausible possible  Marlowe / Shakspere connection, which assumes, that (surviving) Marlowe wrote under a multiplicity of pennames including Michael Drayton ...

(432) What on earth entitled so-called "experts" to exclude the true "Shakespeare" as the author of the "Mucedorus" play?

M U C E D O R U S

with no autobiographic roots whatsoever?

-  The complex question of Shakespeare's authorship can not be solved without Marlowe.

Why the author of "Mucedorus" 1598 , the most popular play of the Shakespeare period,  remained anonymous? -

Why Mucedorus was not written by the "true" most popular 'TRUE' Shakespeare ?

Title page of "Mucedorus", first Edition 1598 .- Most popular play of the Shakespeare period
Mucedorus , the most popular play of the Shakespeare period, went through 17 editions between 1598 and 1668.-  The words, “Newly set foorth,” on the title-page 1598 of the first Edition (s.Faksimile) may indicate  that it was even written and produced at earlier times;

The appearance of the morality figures of "Envy" and "Comedy" in the induction and epilogue indicate an earlier  date of production. The name Mucedorus, and the disguise of that prince as a shepherd, recall one (Musidorus) of the two heroes of Sidney’s Arcadia. The question as to the author of the  „Mucedorus“ play is controversial until today.

Some attributed the whole of the play to Shakespeare (the first advocate of this hypothesis was the German poet Ludwig Tieck;)
Others think it not improbable that the scenes added in the edition of 1610 (s.Faksimile), were written by Shakespeare, whilst a third group of critics claim that Shake-speare had nothing at all to do with Mucedorus, other Elizabethan dramatists such as Lodge, Greene, or Peele,  composed it in the beginning of his dramatical career.

A Spanish prince disguises himself as a shepherd , as a hermit,  as a wild man of the woods, as a bear  who combines cannibal instincts with a nice taste for romance, as a rustic clown; the  bear  instructs the princess  how to distinguish between the hero lover and the Coward — these are all most notable ingredients not only of the play (multiple disguises, banishments from court,  revealing his identity) but also of the biography of the anaonymous author (Christopher Marlowe).

Does anyone believe, that the frequency of the dominant themes of  "Mucedorus", the "loss of identity" corresponding to the destiny of Marlowe (banish, banishment,  exile, disguise, hiding, concealment, hermit, secrecy etc.) has no autobiogra-phic roots whatsoever?

A few extracts of single lines of the "Mucedorus" play

Segasto. You are still in your knavery, but sith
I cannot have his life, I will procure
His banishment for ever. Come on, sirrah,  II/4
Mucedorus. Can Amadine so churlishly command,
To banish th' shepherd from her lather'.-, court? 2  III/1
Mucedorus. I linger life, yet wish for speedy death.
Amadine. Shepherd !
Although thy banishment ahead be decreed,  IKII/2
Mucedorus. Ah, Amadine, to hear of banishment is death, Ay, double death to me, but since 1 must depart,
One thing 1 crave — III/2
Mucecedorus. Yet great dislike, or else no banishment.
Amadine. Shepherd, it only is
Segasto that procures thy banishment.
Mucedorus. Unworthy wights are most in jealous .
Amadine. Would God, they would free thee from banishment, Or likewise banish me     III/2
Segasto. Why, thou knave, did I not bid thee banish the
shepherd, buzzard ?   III/3
Segasto. I tell thee, the shepherd's banishment   III/3
Segasto. Then you will not tell me whether you have banished him, or no ?
Mouse.[Clown] Why, 1 cannot say banishment, an you would give me a thousand pounds to say so.
Segasto. Why , you whoreson slave, have you forgotten that I sent you and another to drive away the shepherd?
Mouse.[lown] What an ass are you; here's a stir indeed, here'smessage, errand, banishment,
Mucedorus. Ay, that's a question whereof you mayn't be resolved. You know that I am banish'd from the court, go I know likewise each passage is beset,
So that we cannot long escape unknown,
Therefore my will is this, that we return,
Right through the thickets, to the wild man's cave,
And there a while live on's provision,
Until the search and narrow watch be past:
This is my counsel, and I think it best  IV/5
Amadine. Well, shepherd, sith thou sufferest this for mv sake, With thee in exile also let me live,
(...)Unless thy wisdom suit mi- with disguise,
According to my purpose. I/1

Enter Mucedorus, to disguise himself. II

Come, habit, thou art fit for me. [He disguiseth himself.
No shepherd now, an hermit I must be.
Methinks this fits me very well;
Now must I learn to bear a walking staff,
And exercise some gravity withal.
Mucedorus . Yes, princel) horn, my father is a king,
My mother queen, and of Valentia both.
[Throwing off his disguise.
King. What, Mucedorus? welcome to our court!
What cause hadst thou to come to me disguis'd?  V/1
And thou bright sun, my comfort in the cold,
Hide, hide thy face, and leave me comfortless;
I'll lei out all the rest, to see if he
be not hid in the barrel; an I find him not there, I'll to the cupboard; I'll not leave one corner of her house unsearched. V faith, ye old crust, I will be with you now. III/6
Comedy. How now, Envy? what, blushest thou already?
keep forth, hide not thy head with shame,  V/1
And at his 'parture bound my secrecy
By his affection's loss, not to disclose it.
But care of him, and pity of your age, Makes my tongue blab what my breast vow'd — concealment. IV/2
To-morrow the performance shall explain
What words conceal: till then, drums speak, bells ring,
Give plausive welcomes to our brother king.V/1

(431) Epilogue to the final last [5th.] Edition of “The True Shakespeare: Christopher Marlowe” (Jan 2016)

A hefty slaty review of orthodox

  Stratfordian Prof. Werner von Koppenfels

in the „Frankfurter Allgemeine“(FAZ)...

German Book
"The True Shakespeare
Christopher Marlow!
2016 5th edition

Prof. (Emeritus)
 Werner von Koppenfels
After its first appearance Prof. Werner von Koppenfels, Emeritus, former Professor of English of the University of Munich, savaged mercilessly the German Book  "The real Shakespeare: Christopher Marlowe" in a review for the german newspaper "Frankfurter Allgemeine" FAZ on Nov 2011!  entitled:  So eine Maulwurfexistenz ist doch enorm anstrengend    ["Such a mole existence is nevertheless extremely demanding"].

The question remains whether the FAZ review caused the german  medias  afterwards to treat the book even more merciless by ignoring it completely ?

For the violence of the FAZ attack there may be some reasons:
1) either the author of the book was unable to recognize himselves as a "conspiracy theorist", as a "madman" or "paranoid", (as he was denounced elsewhere) or
2) our critic feels through the book on a sore point taken, what he's trying to cover up by that he puts it in the pillory, or
3) Koppenfels'  age no longer allows him to skip the hurdles of traditional, dogmatic long fixed perspectives. -

----------------
By nature, I am inclined to the third alternative. Not simply because  having never suffered before from delusions and avowedly never knitted in any conspiracy ....

All the facts, arguments, reasoning and evidences on 700 pages were not of primary interest for solidified biased, Prof.Koppenfels,

Koppenfels alone was  interested in the secondary motives of a  "scientific outsider" who  dared to shake  the sacrosanct version of the Stratford Dogma.

What a shame,  it was just too much for a goth.

(427) The "true" vulgar scandal of the "true" Shakespeare

A L E X A N D E R   W A U G H  (4)

not ready to  remove his "Oxfordian" blinkers!

What a shame! .

The "orthodox" Oxfordian  Alexander Waugh, Honorary President of the Shakespeare Authorship Coalition, Co-editor of  „Shakespeare Beyond Doubt? Exposing an Industry in Denial“ (2013) gave a talk [s. Video below] at the 2015  Shakespeare Oxford Fellowship Conference in Ashland, Oregon,

Alexander Waugh (1963 - 2024)

Waugh dealt with the problem that in Shake-speare  Sonnets  the poet reveals that he is embroiled in a ‘vulgar scandal’  that has made him ‘a motley to the view’ and a ‘disgrace in men’s eyes.  ’Even though   at the beginning he warns the audience that there are high risks involved in interpreting the sonnets biographically: he does exactly that!

————

In looking for any  literary evidence  of such a vulgar scandal, he selected early literary references to  Shakespeare such as :

   Venus & Adonis  (Shakespeare),
   AVISA (H.W.), s.Blogs 414, 415,  416, 417 , 418 ,
    Polimanteia  s.Blogs 403, 404,  405,  406,  407, 408 (W.C.),
    Delia (S.Daniel),
    Epigrams  (Weever),
    Pygmalion (Marston).

How could it happen that Waugh completely ignored Marlowe who  suffered the most dramatic
vulgar life scandal of all english poets?

Almost 100 years ago, in 1923, 2 years prior (!!)  to  Hotson's discovery of the "Latin" Coroner's Report , Archie Webster concluded that not Shakespeare, but Marlowe must have been the author of the sonnets. He found the extraordinary life of Marlowe and...

... his [ Marlowes] tragic "vulgar scandal" fully reflected  in the sonnets

Can anyone explain who biographically - if not Marlowe - could represent or mirror the subsequent contextual extracts of the sonnets of Shakespeare?

And live no more to shame nor me nor you«
Son.76:
»Why write I still all one, ever the same,
And keep invention in a noted weed,
That every word doth almost tell my name,
Showing their birth and where they did proceed?«
Son.81
»Your name from hence immortal life shall have,
Though I, once gone, to all the world must die«
Son.111
»Thence comes it that my name receives a brand«

Complaint, Sorrow,  Suffering, Grief, Sadness, Melancholy, Distress, Failure, Weeping

Son.28
»But day doth daily draw my sorrows longer,
And night doth nightly make grief’s length seem stronger.«
Son.30
»Then can I drown an eye, unused to flow,
(…)
Then can I grieve at grievances foregone,
And heavily from woe to woe tell o’er
The sad account of fore-bemoaned moan,
Which I new pay as if not paid before.«
Son.34:
»Nor can thy shame give phisicke to my griefe«
Son.50:
»The beast that bears me, tired with my woe,
Plods dully on, to bear that weight in me,
(…)
For that same groan doth put this in my mind:
My grief lies onward, and my joy behind.«
Son.64
»When I haue seene such interchange of state,
Or state it selfe confounded, to decay,
Ruine hath taught me thus to ruminate«

Marlowe's  Life smotto

Son.73
»In me thou seest the glowing of such fire
That on the ashes of his youth doth lie,
As the death-bed whereon it must expire,
Consumed with that which it was nourished by.«

(411) The adulatory "media pabulum" (Bardolatry) for William of Stratford during his anniversary

B A R D O L A T R Y

...mainly written by a journalistic juvenile "pseudo-expertise" with always newly copied  concoctions,  makes it necesssary also  to point to  opposing views  (s.Video)

Basically science is about doubt.- Someone who does not doubt will not put essential questions .

Academic Shakespeare experts (Synonym. "Stratfordians) have not or never had any doubt ! Thats why they have rejected it from the beginning, to even tackle a single of the numerous problems and inconsistencies of Shakespeare's authorship questions scientifically.!

Usually Research starts with developing and testing  a "working hypothesis"  challenging current paradigms.
e. g.

a) Is William Shakspere (Stratford) identical with William  Shakespeare
(Author of  "Macbeth" or "The  Winters Tale"?

b) Was Marlowe’s murther feigned in reality?

The current mighty "media pabulum" of an adulation of William of Stratford  (Bardolatry) during his anniversary  (apr.23, 400th year of death) , mainly written by a journalistic juvenile "pseudo-expertise" with always newly copied  concoctions,  makes it necesssary also  to point to  opposing views  ....

(409) Shakespeare's empty grave. Why the missing skull ?

Shakspere's skull missing

(...in his Grave...)

Why the global media coverage did not touch  the century old Shakespeare authorship question (SAQ) a single time, possibly related to this result?

One should realize that the more amazing thing would have been if the skull were found to be intact.

____________

Archaeologists recently scanned for the first time (using  GPR,  Ground-Penetrating Radar)  the grave of  William Shakespeare at England's Holy Trinity Church in Stratford-upon-Avon.- The findings were featured in a documentary "Secret History: Shakespeare's Tomb"  on Britain's Channel 4 TV and had a great media coverage.-  They made a head-scratching discovery:

Shakspere's skull missing
(also no other bones were identifiable(?), but astonishingly not mentioned).

Time has not yet come for orthodox Stratfordians, mainly literary academics, to rethink about the life of the author of Shakespeare's works with the possibility of an entirely different paradigm  deliberately dismissed.

Given the facts abouts the empty grave why has the global media coverage not touched the century old Shakespeare authorship question (SAQ) a single time? (read Blog 345 The SAQ: The most perverse , irrational academic Taboo ever...)

(408) The "true" Shakespeare . (Polimanteia , Part 6 )

P O L I M A N T E I A (7)

The Author
Christopher Marlowe :
The jew of Malta
 (printed 1633)

„The Jew of Malta", was a successful play of Christopher Marlowe, which has been premiered in London 1592 with 36 performances during 1591/92.. It opens with a prologue spoken by Machevill (Machiavelli) indicating an allegoric autobiografic presentation of Marlowe's change of identity, his survival and his frequent concealed returns to Englands.-

(»Machevil« has been proposed as the anagram »Ch. M. Alive«)  of the living Christopher Marlowe.

The play wasn't published until 1633, long after all those who would have been involved in court saving Marlowe from the Star Chamber, were dead.

It is of note that Marlowe was referred to as "Machevill" by his friends.(T.Nashe, R.Greene, G.Harvey) It is not known at what time the prologue was added to the play, most likeley 1601 after a noticeable revival and textual revision of the play. For several reasons the play was printed for the first time only in 1633.

The first words of the prologue clearly clarify Marlowe’s situation: The world believes that he is dead,  (»albeit all the world think Machiavel is dead, but in reality
yet  was his soul but flown beyond the Alps; and , now the Guise is dead, is come from France and frolic with his friends.  … and let them know that I am Machiavel« .

The historical Machiavelli was dead at that time for nearly 100 years. Machevil , who plays no role whatsoever within the play. Marlowe expresses in the prologe, that
«, »to frolic with his friends«  »to some perhaps my name is odiuos (»but such as love me, guard me from their tongues« »let them kow that I am Machiavell »admired I am of those who hate me most«,  »though some speak openly against my books«).

Marlowe is fully aware that some speak openly against his book«),.  (»Yet will they read me and thereby attain To Peter’s chair« they do not want to conflict with religion, he  count religion but a childish toy »and hold there is no sin but ignorance«). He reflects, wich rumors my have distributed his alleged murder  (»Birds of the air will tell of murders past (»I am ashamed to hear such fooleries«).  (»Let me be envied and not pitied!«).  (»But whither am I bound? I come not, I, To read a lecture here in Britanie, But to present the tragedy of a Jew«).
                                                   ______________________

In »Polimanteia« the author describes the danger, caused by equating him with Macchiavelli.- He sees this as the main  reason for his fateful doom (»Machivell hath obtained so much credit amongst the greatest states men of all Europe, Atheisme hath perswaded the world of my death«). No comparison could have been been more harmful for him.(»Cann any counsel be more pernicious to a Common wealth?«... »which he never meaneth to imbrace in trueth«
.
This statement can easily recognize Marlowe as the author of "Polimanteia".

Who else would have had in 1594 reason to accuse Machiavelli as the cause of his "supposed" demise?
