(106) Wolfgang Schneider: Gelferts response to his authorship question....

HANS-DIETER  G E L F E R T (5)

his falal human  inclination to conspiracy theories ..

Wolfgang Schneider's commentary reinforced his "deadlocked prejudice" rather than his "own critical point of view."

Hans-Dieter Gelfert                                          Wolfgang Schneider

Wolfgang Schneider was interviewed  at the " Deutschlandradio Kultur broadcast "  on his review  of Hans-Dieter Gelfert's (left) new Shakespeare's book "Shakespeare in his time
"
The moderator initially addressed  Gelfert's view on Shakespeare's authorship problem.

Schneider expressed that  Gelfert "quite elegantly" scraped off all the candidates for the true Shakespeare. This is difficult to understand.

Consider that Gelfert wipes aside  a single of 2  Shakespeare candidates (Christopher Marlowe) in  the prologue of his book (under "Who wrote Shakespeare's works?")

With 5 "abstruse" arguments (→ for details, see Blog 77, 78, 79, 80 ), who testify that Gelfert can never even  have opened the book Mr Schneider seems to agree with Gelfert's opinion, who concludes by dismissing the whole Shakespeare speculation that this is based on the [fatal] human inclination to conspiracy theories ... (See the problem of this term see → Blog 15 and → Blog 50)

Schneider's commentary reinforced his "deadlocked prejudice" rather than his "own critical point of view."  It is not logical to dismiss Shakespeare's "world knowledge" (according to Gelfert) claiming a university education did not impart world knowledge at that time, nor to point out Thomas Mann's two-time "repetitions of school classes"   and his missing high school diploma (Abitur).

Obviously, the complex problem of the authorship question had soon to be silenced with a single [often-used] lethal anecdotal Injection ("Circumstantial Evidence") ....

And when Schneider follows Gelfert
that Shakespeare even went to an exquisite Latin school and lived in an "intellectually very stimulating city" [Stratford], he may well know that these sentences are not substantiated by any reliable source ...

It is not even proven whether Shakespeare ever attended a school.

(105) Lukas Erne supports Shakespeare's treacherous "Quislings"

PROF.  L U K A S  E R N E

Oddly enough he thinks

of our poet Genius Shakespeare as a "team player"

Lukas Erne, Professor of English Literature at the University of Geneva  (renowned Shake-speare und Marlowe expert) challenges in his book "Shakespeare's Modern Collaborators"  (E-book Series "Shakespeare NOW" Vol.8, 2008) the view,  that Shakespeare is solely responsible for the play texts we read today.

He emphasizes at the very beginning, that he does not do so, however,  because he shares the view of the so-called "Anti-Stratfordians", who have constructed "conspiracy theories" (see also Blog Nr.15,  and Blog Nr.50) to suggest, that someone else wrote the plays

Rather he bases his arguments on scholarships, which claim it obvious that Shakespeare's texts are the result of various kinds of cooperation (coauthorship, collaboration with actors, printers, intervention of editors). This is where the  "Academic Authorship Taboo" comes full circle.

Did Erne really think of our poet Genius
Shakespeare as a "team player"?

Why he didn't at least discuss the possibility that his alleged coworkers (like Peele, Middleton, Wilkins, Fletcher and such like) could have been constructed treacherous pseudonymous collaborators or Quisling?

(104) Ross Barber and Charles Nicholl argue pro and con about the Marlowe Shakespeare Theory....

 R O S   B A R B E R (2)

Charles Nichols daring Judgment

:...the evidence for someone else [other than the Stratford man] having written those plays is entirely non-existent, ...

October 4th 2013, on the occasion of the "Cheltenham Literature Festival

" Ros Barber, the literary prize winner and author of the verse novel "The Marlowe Papers

discussed with historian and author of "The Reckoning", Charles Nicholl,  the Marlowe-Shakespeare Authorship theory. The session was recorded and you may listen to the discussion- click below....

Charles Niccoll Book 2 editions
The  reckoning `1993. / 2003

listen to the discussion (1h 20min)

Rarely the discussion was enlightening since both only perpetuated their views. I learnt that Nicholl had significantly changed the Scenario of Marlowe's death between his first (1993) and second Edition (2003) in his book "The Reckoning".. In the first Edition, Marlowe was deliberately killed. In the second  Edition, the death was a blunder.....I hope for a Third Edition, in which the death will be a pretence.

Nicholls Statement":...the evidence for someone else [other  than the  Stratford man] having written those plays is entirely non-existent, there is not one  scrap of contemporary evidence to suggest  that there was any kind of extraordinary sleight of hand being performed by the most popular dramatist of the day ..."
-----------------
If this would be true one had to accept that about 1000 (that's correct! thousand!) arguments (of high probability) identified in the Marlowe Book  and this Blog had to be false, It seems appropriate to hesitate to accept the statement of Nicholl.

Opposition from the followers of Marlowe

(102) Sir Stanley Wells' deliberately misleading book title !

S T A N L E Y   W E L L S (3)

Sir Stanley Wells' deliberately misleading book title !

If Stanley Wells  would have been an honest man

he would have put the title question of his book differently.-

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Stanley Wells, renowned Shakespeare expert and former Head  of the "Shakespeare Birthplace Trust" published  Febr.4th 2014 a new e-book entitled  "Why Shakespeare was Shakespeare"

It's dishonest, that Wells falsifies the spelling of the name of the Stratford man.
There do exist no "familiar" records (like baptism, wedding, births, deaths, will, signatures)  wheresoever, showing the Stratford man's name written as "Shake" instead of "Shak".

By claiming with the title Phrase that the two names are the same, and spelling them the same, Wells deliberately misleads the reader from the beginning into thinking that of course, the Stratford man was also the author.

If Wells would have been an honest man he would have put the question:

Was   Shakspere [Stratford]  the author Shakespeare of "Hamlet" ?
or
                   Why Shakspere was Shakespeare?

(101) Eva Pfister, "without any sin but ignorant"

E V A  P F I S T E R
and her German radio

 "Calendar Page" Febr.26 of Marlowe

February 26, 2014 Eva Pfister, writer and journalist,  produced for the daily "Calendar Page " of German-Radio Culture a radio broadcast about Christopher Marlowe on the occasion of his 450 birthday .

Mrs. Pfister finally concluded :      the absurdity of The MARLOWE/SHAKESPEARE Idea

[Translation] He[MARLOWE] was only 29 years old and at the height of his fame , when stabbed to death May 30th  1593  in a pub in Deptford . Probably they wanted to eliminate a potential traitor. Rather absurd though is the idea that this was just an apparent death  , and Christopher Marlowe wrote his immortal dramas under the name of Shakespeare.

It is most astonishing, how easily the "advanced" writer Eva Pfister wipes the Marlowe Thesis *1) aside with a single sentence  ( ...., although the reference of the Marlowe book in Germany is given at the end of the subsequent Deutschland-Radio text

Translation
Rather outlandish, however, is the thesis that this was only an apparent death, and Christopher Marlowe, under the name of Shakespeare, wrote his immortal Dramas.

Christopher Marlowe / alias Shakespeare was  right with his insight

There is no sin but ignorance !

(99) How can Oxfordians ever expect to win the race about Shakespeare‘s authorship?

THE. UNSURMOUNTABLE ABYSS.

of implausibility:

 Oxford's year of death (1604)

_________________

Edward de Vere,  17th Earl of Oxford

The 2 fundamental arguments against Edward de Vere are likely to result in an everlasting perpetuation or paralysis of the solution in the Shakespeare authorship Problem!

1.)
The first is his fatal early death year 1604 . It seems impossible to give  logic, convincing and plausible arguments, why it needed 20 years (1604-1623), to suddenly bring out the huge hidden Treasury (First Folio)  of Edward de Vere‘s unpublished works written prior to 1604…this will never  make enough sense …let alone

2.)
the second argument against Edward de Vere: a completely missing Poet- Genius of a dramatic playwright .....

Mike Rubbo, an Australian filmmaker , heavily influenced by Calvin Hoffman's groundbraking book,"The Murder of the man who was Shakespeare" , produced a documentary film "Much Ado about Something" (available on DVD - s. Video-trailer) on the Marlowe-Shakespeare authorship Thesis:

We are greatly indepted to Mike Rubbo that he kept alive and preserved for posterity the early efforts of important personalities (following Calvin Hoffman) who made essential  contributions  to the development and worldwide dissemination of the Marlowe/Shakespeare Thesis. (97) Authorship debates! - Annual rituals! Eternal recurrence of the same ??

PAUL EDMONDSON
3 notable statements

Edmondson               Dobson                  Wells                                       Emmerich                    Beauclerk                 Leahy

. Dr. Paul Edmondson is a  Shakespeare scholar and author.,   Head of Research and Knowledge and Director of the Stratford-upon-Avon Poetry Festival at The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust. He has written  books and articles on Shakespeare, including collaborations with Stanley Wells (e.g., Shakespeare Beyond Doubtand The Shakespeare Circle: An Alternative Biography). He is a priest in the Church of England .

Paul Edmondson on  a →"Shakespeare Oxford Authorship debate" , organized by the English Speaking Union  (ESU) June 2011  on the occasion of Emmerichs film "Anonymous" among other things made 3 notable statements which have etched unforgettably in my mind:

1) Edmondson "Any actor will tell you that Christopher Marlowe's´mighty line is that of a different writer:[compared to Shakespeare] "
How could he reach such a "stranded" conclusion ? There are only a few actors who ever played Marlowe. Why did he elevate "any actor" to a literary key witness?  Experts agree that "Edward II" , or "Hero & Leander" (Marlowe)   and "Richard III" or "Venus &Adonis" (Shakespeare) are virtually identical in terms of substance, style and artistic Level.

2) Edmondson:  "The Suggestion that de Vere was able to release 14 plays after his death in 1604 including one coauthored with Thomas Middleton and another coauthored with John Wilkins and 3 coauthored with John Fletcher beggars belief"
Does  Edmondson really believe  that the author of Hamlet was a "teamplayer"[co-author] at all ?

3) Edmondson "Perhaps there is material for a Holywood Sequel showing that Shakespeares collaborators were also front men for aristocratic geniuses.

"Edmondson mocked at the  Oxfordian idea of Shakespeare beeing a frontman, by adding additional "established" poets as frontmen (Middleton ,Wilkins, Fletcher).

He has  not yet noticed, that his suggestion [of those FRONTMEN] - according to  the advanced Marlowe.   Theory- approaches the historic truth!

(96) Max Plancks general hope for a new scientific truth, related to Shakespeare!

MAX  PLANCKs

may convince future generations!

                                                                     Max Planck
                                        Hans-Dieter Gelfert /

Werner von Koppenfels                                                                                     Hildegard Hammerschmidt-Hummel /
                                                                                                                                                                                        Andreas Höfele

Various  [German ] “academic" Shakespeare experts have explicitly expressed in the past, that they reject the debate about the Shakespeare authorship  as a mistake. They have, however, not engaged at any time  in the unanswered questions (s.Video below) and the Arguments documented   pro Marlowe :but they prefered to rely on their own prejudices.

One can only hope that Max Planck's insights may reach future generations: He  wrote in his later years in his autobiography in 1948:

Max Planck: “
A new scientific truth does not triumph by convincing its opponents and making them see the light, but rather because its opponents eventually die, and a new generation grows up that is familiar with it.”

(95) Shakespeare Expert Prof.Werner von Koppenfels and his merciless prejudice....

A   S L A T I N G    R E V I E W

of the "Marlowe-Shakespeare Book and Thesis  " ,

                                                              Werner von Koppenfels

The venerable Emeritus Werner von Koppenfels , former Professor for Anglistik und Comparatistik at the Ludwig-Maximilian University Munich(LMU)  and orthodox Shakespeare expert  in the "Feuilleton", (Cultural Section of the "Frankfurter Allgemeine"-FAZ), a national centre-right wing German newspaper November,18, 2011 under the heading:

"So eine Maulwurfexistenz ist doch anstrengend
"[Translat.: Such an existence of a mole is but exhausting]

wrote a slating review of the  "Marlowe-Book" , which supports the thesis, that  Marlowe must have been the true Shakespeare .(Summary of the book)

Conrad in the acknowledgements of his book (2. Edition) had written: ["Translation !] .

.. I am thankful , that I've been blessed in my later years, to enter the digital age with its complete access to historical and literary sources. Had I lived only twenty years earlier, my  project could not have been realized....

Koppenfels damnation and prejudice  to the book in the F.A.Z.  was nocticably based  on this argument...

—->Translation Koppenfels  FAZ
I hope he [ the author] will recover in his virtual worlds of literature from the demanding diagnostics of his medical word -  , this should be granted to a computer-savvy physician . But would it not have been better to unload the total muddle and clutter for the community of like-minded people at the appropriate landfill on the Internet? -

Koppenfels prejudice could not bring him at any time to approach the arguments of the book, not even according to the scientific principle of a working hypothesis:

"If we accept , Conrad is right, that Marlowe's death was faked, which of his arguments  (> 1000) would then be consistent?

(94) FAZ: Spiegel recognizes the fatal circular reasoning of Ms. Hammerschmidt-Hummel...but...

Hubert Spiegel  underlined the impact of circular reasoning:

                                      Hubert  Spiegel F.A.Z.                                     Hildegard Hammerschmidt-Hummel

Hubert Spiegel, journalist of the cultural section of the "Frankfurter Allgemeine"(FAZ), a national centre-right wing German newspaper, reported February 13, 2014 under the heading: "Shakespeare portraits : This image is enchantingly pale" on the press conference with a presentation of two new "real" Shakespeare portraits by Professor Hildegard Hammerschmidt-Hummel.

He demonstrated the absurdity of  her circular reasoning of the authenticity of these images. In a short formula he condensed her cyclic arguments , [ comments in brackets are added]
FAZ 13.2.14 .[Free Translation].
The portraits resemble the death mask, the  death mask [discovered by Ms.Hammerschmidt ] is real , so the portraits are genuine. And because the portraits are genuine, the death mask must even more so be genuine .
                                                           -----------------------------------

Spiegel seems to have no doubts  about  "the Stratford Shakespeare" , he does not seem to notice that he succumbed himself  to the same fatal vicious circle (that runs through the whole Shakespeare authorship debate)  when he sneeres at Hildegard Hammerschmidt-Hummel.
FAZ : 13.2.14 [Free Translation] .
The Poet wisely in his Epitaph cursed all those, who would dare to move his bones

Compacted in a short formula Hubert Spiegel  underlines the impact of
circular reasoning:
The businessman by the name of Shakspeare is buried in Stratford - The poet named Shakespeare wrote  "Hamlet".  So the business man is the poet of "Hamlet", or : So the poet of "Hamlet  is buried in Stratford .....
