Why Bates omission of Vautrollier?
Who may have been Thomas North?
Prof. Jonathan Bate in his Shakespeare MOOC course (lesson 8-4. nov.2014) introduced Shakespeare's schoolfriend Richard Field (Stratford) as the printer of Thomas North' translations „The Lives of the Noble Grecians and Romans" (by Plutarch), an influential book that Shakespeare went to when he decided to dramatize „Antony & Cleopatra.“
Prof. Bate knows that Richard Field's edition (1595) was not the first, but that of Thomas Vautrollier (1579).- Richard Field became his apprentice. After Vautrollier’s death (1587) Richard Field married his widow 1589 .
What may be the reason why Prof. Bate omitted Thomas Vautrollier but emphasized that his apprentice, a [possible?] "schoolfriend" from Stratford, Richard Field was the first, who printed this work as a template for Shakespeare?
